Darkwood is a survival horror video game developed and published by Acid Wizard Studio. The game was first released through Steam Early Access on July 24, 2014, eventually becoming a full game release on August 17, 2017[1] for Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux.[2] The game takes place in a mysterious dark forest somewhere in the Polish People's Republic or according to the developers, another region of the Soviet Bloc[3] wherein the main characters have been trapped. On March 20, 2019, a Nintendo Switch version was announced during the Nindies Nintendo Direct and was released on May 16, 2019.[4] The game was also ported and released for the PlayStation 4 on May 14, 2019, for Xbox One on May 16, under the publisher Crunching Koalas,[5][6] and for Google Stadia on September 17, 2021. It later released for PlayStation 5 on October 28, 2022 and for Xbox Series X/S on December 23, 2022.
The game was revealed with the release of a pre-alpha gameplay trailer on YouTube, on March 5, 2013.[7] A page for the game was created on Steam Greenlight on March 11, 2013, with the following months seeing the release of a campaign on the popular crowdfunding website Indiegogo which funded the game's initial developing. The campaign collected over US$57,000, totalizing 143% of the established goal (US$40,000).[8] On July 24, 2014, the game was released to the public in an alpha stage, with updates being released ever since. Support for 32-bit Linux systems, although present at first, was dropped mid-development, as a survey done by the developers showed no players currently using such a system. On June 6, 2017, the game was pushed out of alpha, and into version beta 1.

On January 22, 2018, the developers released the 1.2 update, bringing Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and German translations to the game.[2] The translations were worked on with the help of the community. They also stated that more language localizations were in development. In May 2019, the official Nintendo Switch version was released.[10] On August 7, 2019, the 1.3 version was released, containing a number of bugfixes, optimizations and localizations for Simplified Chinese, Italian, Turkish and Hungarian. A French localization was also confirmed to be in development.[11]
The announcement of the Nintendo Switch version was followed by articles by Variety[22] and IGN. In the second one, Tom Marks (writing for IGN) praised the game for "not taking cheap shots" and "playing surprisingly well with a Switch Pro Controller".[23]
Darkwood does a great job of showing off its weird, unsettling world, but it struggles to tell players what they have to do. The woods are home to secrets and terrible truths alike. Though it falls short of reaching its full potential, mostly due to questionable controls and cumbersome combat, this horror game is worth the experience on the merits of its haunting atmosphere alone.
Darkwood already had years of history behind it at the time of its publication on the PlayStation 4 this month. The game earned over $57,000 via crowdfunding in 2013, and premiered on Steam Early Access the following year. It took three years to finalise the game, with its full PC release occurring in August of 2017.
Darkwood successfully creates a creepy atmosphere that will make even veteran horror game players jumpy. Even simply standing in the hideout waiting for morning can be plenty scary, as there is always the threat that someone, or something, can break in and wreak havoc on the player.
Darkwood uses a "day"/night cycle that largely dictates the flow of the gameplay. Players are encouraged to explore the woods during the day to find supplies, like boards to barricade windows or key items to progress the plot, and at night, they need to hunker down in their hideout. As long as they have a fully-gassed generator and have properly barricaded their hideout, players should be safe until morning. However, players who fail to prepare for the night will likely find themselves murdered by the strange beings that appear once the sun goes down.
Secondly, actually exploring the game world can be frustrating, though it's likely a necessary evil. Exploring the woods is purposefully confusing, and while that does help with creating the sense of dread that Darkwood cultivates so masterfully, it sometimes makes the game feel like a chore to play.
Darkwood's story is twisted and full of weird characters and unnerving moments. The ultra-tough gameplay is likely to turn quite a few people off and it can be tedious, but those that stick with Darkwood will be rewarded with a memorable survival-horror game that will linger with them long after they've conquered its nightmares.

100% completion of Darkwood will require at least two full playthroughs of the game, depending on the choices you make. Your actions have consequences, and will affect your game. If you miss something, you'll have to replay the game again (at least until that point). There are four major choices to make, and each will have different consequences on the game. The PlayStation version is solid (the game is also coming to Switch this month) and the only real issue I had was with the UI. The inventory system is very clearly designed for PC, and I died a few times because of how finicky digging something out of your backpack can be under pressure. The penalty for this is quite low, thankfully, as you just need to pick up your fallen goods.
We love it when developers acknowledge that not everyone can afford their games and actually do something about it. Case in point, Acid Wizard Studio spent almost 5 years working on its amusing horror game Darkwood and launched the full version in a weekly Steam sale. After seeing that the game sales exceeded everyone's expectations, the guys did something not many would do - upload a legal torrent of the game on Pirate Bay.
A noble decision, no doubt. But at the same time, the thrilled developer is joining those who've already made it clear that they don't want gamers buying game keys from "shady resellers" as means of getting games on the cheap. Here's the full statement:

Instead of worrying about gamers stealing their top-down horror game, they've decided to put the game on The Pirate Bay for players to torrent for free without fear of any repercussions.

There are no catches, but there is one request that accompanies the free version: Acid Wizard Studio has asked that players consider purchasing the game at some point in the future if they enjoy it, even if it's through a sale of some sort. They also asked that players not look to a key reselling site to get a copy of the game, referring to such sites as "the cancer that is leeching off this industry."
In terms of game file size, you will need at least 6GB of free disk space available. To play Darkwood you will need a minimum CPU equivalent to an Intel Core 2 Duo Q6867. Whereas, an Intel Core i3-2340UE is recommended in order to run it. Darkwood system requirements state that you will need at least 4GB of RAM. If possible, make sure your have 6GB of RAM in order to run Darkwood to its full potential. The cheapest graphics card you can play it on is an ATI Radeon HD 4850. But, according to the developers the recommended graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660.

Imagine that you are on a beautiful place in the woods. Beautiful sun, everywhere natural beauty, peaceful environment etc. and of course how can this be completed without your loved ones whose hand you will be holding. But now imagine opposite of all this; you are all alone on an isolated island where it is dull and dark environment. Every moment you are feared of death. There is lot of adventure with a constant fear of losing your life. If you want to look for your fear, if you want to take a look at your inner demon, that will only devour you. This all will be experienced in this game that is darkwood.
